Root Canal Treatment
The main purpose of root canal treatment (RCT) is to save a tooth that is damaged due to decay, disease or injury. The usual symptoms for a RCT indicated tooth are
- Sensitive to cold and hot foods/drinks.
- Unstimulated Pain from the tooth.
- Tenderness or Pain when biting on sound, cracked teeth.
- Keeping you awake at night time.
- Swelling of gum near the affected tooth /swelling of the face.
- Pus discharge from the affected tooth.
- Finally loosening of the tooth.
This treatment preserves the natural tooth and bone levels. It is preferable to save a tooth as removal of a tooth may cause problems with function (eating) and aesthetics (looks).
Root canal therapy is done in one or few visits based on severity of the infection and anatomy of the tooth. Multiple X-rays are taken throughout the procedure to ensure all canals of the tooth are effectively cleaned before a filling is placed to seal off the tooth.
Root canal treated teeth are very brittle as they have no life. So it is highly recommended to have a crown done after procedure to prevent the tooth /root from breaking due to biting force.
